There are three different styles of poker chips available today. Our intention here is to help you decide which poker chip is best suited for your needs to have that real casino feel. Many websites show poker chip after poker chip but in fact they are all the same. JDCpokerchips .com wants to help you, by giving you the necessary information that will enable you to purchase the style of poker chips that best fits your needs.

There are three different types of poker chips, Plastic Poker Chips, Composite Poker Chips and Clay Composite Poker Chips

Plastic Poker Chips
Composed completely of plastic, these are Poker Chips you've probably played with at one time in your life. These chips weigh very little, and are very inexpensive, also known as Supermarket Poker Chips. Since these can be found in almost any store, JDCpokerchips.com does not supply this grade of poker chip.

Composite Poker Chips
Most composite chips are made of a higher grade of plastic known as ABS (high impact strength plastic). These poker chips have an insert made of metal that adds weight, and allows it to be hot stamped. There are other advantages of ABS Composite chips. The first is price. ABS is a less expensive material than clay. So a composite chip is always going to be lower in price than a chip with actual clay content.

Secondly, composite chips can yield sharper, more detailed designs than a clay chip can (ABS plastic used in composites is harder than clay, and this hardness creates sharper designs). Composite chips also have more durability and lifespan. Poker chips with clay content can easily chip and wear down much faster than ABS composite chips.

Clay Composite Chips
Composed of clay plus other materials. Often you will find a chip that has a metal insert added to increase the weight, or to allow for hot stamping. There is no such thing as 100% pure clay poker chips. A pure clay chip would be so weak and brittle you would be able to snap it in half. That means that any clay chip is clay composite, even a real Las Vegas casino chip, which is usually a clay-ceramic composite.

The Advantages of a Composite Poker Chip are:

  • Price - Composite chips are much cheaper than clay
  • Looks - Composite chips can have sharper, more detailed designs
  • Life span - Clay poker chips can easily chip and wear down much faster

The Advantages of a Clay Composite Poker Chip are:

  • Better stacking - Composite poker chips have a slicker surface and do not stack on top of each other as well as clay poker chips .
  • Old time feel - Since clay poker chips are used in casinos, playing with the same type of chip used in Las Vegas may mean something to you.
  • Different sound - When thrown in the pot, the clay gives more of a "thud" than the "clink" you get with a composite poker chip.
